The stannary parliaments and stannary courts were legislative and legal institutions in Cornwall and in Devon . The stannary courts administered equity for the region’s tin-miners and tin mining interests, and they were also courts of record for the towns dependent on the mines. The separate and powerful government institutions available to the tin miners reflected the enormous importance of the tin industry to the English economy during the Middle Ages. Perched on a windswept bluff overlooking the north Atlantic, you’ll find the remains of what was supposedly King Arthur’s Cornish retreat. These castle ruins hint at life here in the Middle Ages, when thatched cottages were replaced by the stone fortifications, which were known as Richard’s castle .
The Isles of Scilly are a group of islands south west of Cornwall and forming part of the county. The Isles of Scilly have a long history of shipwrecks because of the rocky coasts. The southern coast of Cornwall, affectionately known as the Cornish Riviera, is more sheltered hosting safe harbours at locations such as Falmouth and Fowey. During the 19th century researchers began to study the language from any remaining isolated speakers and in 1904 Henry Jenner published A Handbook in the Cornish Language which started the revival proper.
Much of the land in Cornwall was seized and transferred into the hands of a new Norman aristocracy, with the lion’s share going to Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of King William and the largest landholder in England after the king. Some land was held by King William and by existing monasteries – the remainder by the Bishop of Exeter, and a single manor each by Judhael of Totnes and Gotshelm . The first centuries after the Romans left are known as the ‘age of the saints’, as Celtic Christianity and a revival of Celtic art spread from Ireland, Wales and Scotland into Great Britain, Brittany, and beyond. According to tradition the area was evangelised in the 5th and 6th centuries by the children of Brychan Brycheiniog and saints from Ireland. Cornish saints such as Piran, Meriasek, or Geraint exercised a religious and arguably political influence; they were often closely connected to the local civil rulers and in some cases were kings themselves. There was an important monastery at Bodmin and sporadically, Cornish bishops are named in various records.

Once known as St Martin’s Well, it’s been an important source of local legends and good fortune for years. Recently, it was discovered that the last traces of Cornish usage was found in the early 90s. Now, it has come into the hands of the Cornish community to save the relics of Kernewek and it’s been made a part of the local schools’ curriculum.
One of the things that completely sets Cornwall apart is its own language. From music and dance to food and drink, there are many aspects of Cornish culture to explore. Many Cornish people moved to countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa in search of better prospects; they generally moved to places with burgeoning mining industries.
